          Wilhelm Maybach was born on February 9, 1846, in Heilbronn, a small town in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

          His father worked as a carpenter, but at the age of ten, Wilhelm became an orphan and was taken in by a pastor named Werner. He began his technical education at the age of fifteen at a machine factory in Reutlingen, where he worked during the day and studied drafting and natural sciences in the evenings.
