"Martern aller Arten is an aria from the second act of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 1782 German singspiel Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail.
It's in the key of C major, and is a coloratura-style aria. You need a wide voice range, and even the greatest sopranos of the 21st century, such as Diana Damrau, Edda Moser, Maria Callas and Cristina Deutekom have struggled to get the aria perfect.
It is often recommended, along with Der Holle Rache (Queen of the Night aria) from The Magic Flute, as one of the hardest and most challenging operatic arias Mozart had ever written.
German soprano Diana Damrau (born ) has specialized in coloratura parts.
Description
The aria begins with a lengthy two-minute orchestral introduction, which is odd for a Mozart operatic compositions. After the orchestra finishes, the soprano comes in and sings the first section of the opening theme.
Mozart then instructs the singer to sing a scale up to a high C, and then travel back down. The slower, lighter theme that follows it is introduced by the woodwinds and strings. Many people
